The Passion

The following is based on a true story, some facts have been changed but the point stays the same.

How She Found Her Call

By Jeyna LSC

“What do you want to be? Whats your ambition?” the teacher asked the classroom filled with children aged 7.  It was the first day of primary school and she glanced out the window looking out for her mother, making sure she doesnt leave. The other children seemingly do not understand what the teacher has just asked. Well, who can blame them when a question as such isnt comprehensible by a childs mind.

“what do i want to be?” a question she asked when she turned 12. “A lawyer. thats what every else wanted to be. But what do i want?” She pondered. She would like to discover more about space and artifacts, “But does that mean i want to be an astronaut or an archeologist?”, maybe. Throughout her life, she always loved acting. She has been acting on her church stage for christmas plays almost her entire childhood life, with that, “i want to be an actress.” she concluded.

Now, when you start to think life would get a whole lot easier in high school, you’re so wrong. The same question came up when the teacher requested all the students to write down their ambition.  She wrote the same thing on that sheet of paper for two years, first option: actress, second option: lawyer. God knows why she thought of being a lawyer when law was something she never had interest in.

Things became much clearer when she took part in a stage play, “Count Dracula” at the age of 14.  She played the role of the mayors wife. One year later, she wrote and directed a stage play, “the phantom of the opera” in school, winning first place for one competition and second for the other. That was when she knew a part of what she wanted to be. A director.

Turning 16, she took part in an interschool drama competition. Since she did not land into any of the acting roles, she volunteered as one of the crew. The play did not win, but the experience gave her the inspiration to write more.

At the same time, she joined multiple essay writing competitions, and wrote poems as a hobby and a way to express her feelings. It became clear her passion was more than just stage plays and acting. It was writing as well. Having written quite a number of stageplays along with directing them, she finally had it all concluded.

Getting herself involved in her church’s multimedia ministry, where she learnt how to edit and shoot, she found her call. Every opportunity came, some never did, but there was an assurance in her heart, soul and mind that her call was to impact the film industry as a writer/director. It has become more than a dream, more than what God made her to be, it is her passion.

How can one girl bring a change to the film industry when its a place where the good never stays good? Well, guess you would have to wait, cause thats another story.  But nothing is ever impossible with GOD.
